Am-Can Business & Tech School

This is the course and community site. Sign in to reach your cohort discussion forum, your final examination and the school’s policies.

Your learning

The school runs two LMS portals and you will use both. They provide different learning features and platforms, so sign in to the one that has what you need.

How courses are delivered

Which portal do I need?

Portal 1

Course and community portal

amcantech.online

Use this for your class discussion forum, your final exam, the school’s policies, and your own enrolment, profile, fees and payments.

Sign in to the course and community portal

You already have an account here. Sign in with the email address the school writes to.

Portal 2

Student learning portal

techstudy.ca

Use this for your own course: your course outline, syllabus, weekly materials, timetable, assignments, marks and your teacher’s feedback. You see only your own course and your own session.

Sign in to the student learning portal

You set your own password the first time, using a link the school emails you.

Signing in for the first time

The two portals are reached in different ways. Read the one that applies before you try to sign in.

Portal 1

Course and community portal

You already have an account. Your profile was created when you enrolled and it is already connected. There is no new password to wait for. Sign in with the email address the school writes to.

On your course start date, log out and sign in again. That is what opens your learning page. If you stay signed in from before your start date you will not see your course until you have logged out and back in.

Portal 2

Student learning portal

You create your own password. The school emails you a link the first time. Open the link, choose a password, and that is your sign-in from then on.

After that you can change or reset your password yourself at any time.

If the link has not arrived, check your junk or spam folder first, then contact us using the details below.

Never share a password, including with a classmate. Sharing a sign-in counts as cheating under the school’s policy, and everything done in either portal is recorded under your name.

Make sure our emails reach you

Add lms@amcantech.org, admissions@amcantech.org and accounts@amcantech.org to your safe senders list. If your email provider lets you allow whole domains, allow amcantech.org, amcantech.online and techstudy.ca.

If you have forgotten your password

Course and community portal

Open the sign-in page, choose Forgot password, and enter the email address the school writes to. A reset link is emailed to you.

Student learning portal

Use the forgot password link on the sign-in page. If you never received the original link to set your password, email lms@amcantech.org and we will send it again.

What you need to study

  • A computer and a reliable internet connection. A tablet or a phone is not enough for assignments or for the final exam.
  • A working webcam and microphone. Your final exam is supervised online, so you need both.
  • A current web browser, kept up to date.
  • Time in your week. A full credit is 110 hours of work, and all four weekly milestones need you to sign in.

Studying at the Vaughan campus in person? School computers are there, so you do not need your own.

Community involvement, 40 hours

Alongside your courses, every student working toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement, outside instructional time. It is a diploma requirement, not a course requirement, so neither portal counts these hours for you. You choose the activity, you keep the record, and you hand in the two forms.

Before you start, file the Notification of Planned Community Involvement Activities form. When you finish, file the Completion of Community Involvement Activities form. Hours completed before the notification form is approved may not be counted.

The full requirement, the activities that count, the activities that do not count, and both forms to download are on one page.

Your responsibilities

Getting into both portals, and staying in them, is your job as the student. The school gives you the access, the instructions and someone to call. Using them is up to you.

  • Try signing in before your course starts, not on the first morning. If something is wrong, we need time to fix it for you.
  • Keep your email address up to date with the school. Every instruction, password and notice is sent there. Tell the Admissions Office in writing as soon as it changes.
  • Check your junk and spam folders, and keep the school’s addresses on your safe senders list. An email sitting in your junk folder still counts as sent to you.
  • Sign in and finish all four weekly milestones. Finishing your milestones is how your attendance is counted. Not signing in counts the same as not doing the work.
  • Keep your own equipment working. A working computer, browser, webcam, microphone and internet connection are yours to sort out. School computers are there at the Vaughan campus during opening hours if you need them.
  • Tell us about a problem as soon as it happens, and give your student reference number. Do it while the line is answered. Telling us after a deadline has passed will not undo a missed deadline.
  • Keep your passwords to yourself. Anything done under your sign-in is treated as done by you.
  • Complete your 40 hours of community involvement. This is yours to plan, record and report. See Community Involvement, 40 Hours.

If something on our side stops you getting in, tell us straight away and we will take it into account. Everything else is handled under the school’s Attendance and Intake Policy, which explains what happens when a milestone is missed, including when there is a good reason.

I cannot get in

Do not keep retrying and do not wait. Ask us.

Email lms@amcantech.org or telephone 905-326-0045. The line is answered from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Tell us four things so we can fix it in one reply: which of the two portals you cannot get into, the email address you are using, your student reference number, and what you see on the screen, word for word.
